Dissertation Overview

Ph.D. candidates are required to write a dissertation based on original and independent research carried out by the student.

Although there are basic rules dictating how PhD dissertations are done at Berkeley, the content and structure of a student's PhD dissertation is mainly the result of careful consideration and planning between the student and their PhD Dissertation Committee. Please see IB advising (bottom of the page) for information on how to advance to candidacy and set up your dissertation committee.

You must be registered or on filing fee in order to submit your dissertation. Once you're advanced to candidacy, you can review your dissertation committee in your CalCentral account. Please be sure your committee is updated and accurate before filing.
