It is with sadness that we report the passing of Professor Emerita Thelma E. Rowell during December
2024. Dr. Rowell joined the Berkeley faculty in 1974 as a member of the Department of Zoology and,
later, the Department of Integrative Biology. She was a primatologist specializing in the social behavior
of monkeys. Her research included extensive field work in Africa as well as studies of captive animals
housed at the Glickman Field Station in Berkeley. Dr. Rowell is particularly recognized for challenging
existing dogma regarding the distinctiveness of primate societies compared to societies of other
mammals. Dr. Rowell retired from the Berkeley faculty in 1994, after which she returned to her native
Yorkshire and focused her time and attention on the behavior of agricultural animals such as sheep and
goats. We ask that you take a moment to reflect on the loss of this member of the IB community.
