Welcome to Cal Genomics a summer research experience in field genomics funded by generous support from the Department of Integrative Biology, UC Botanical Gardens and Vice Chancellor for Research Office.
Recent advancements in portable scientific tools (such as handheld DNA sequencers) enable promising opportunities for environmental and biodiversity research, point-of-care diagnostics, and epidemiology. In addition to permitting scientists to conduct real-time research in the field, these tools provide exceptional teaching tools to empower students, giving them the ability to perform their own scientific genomics experiments.
In this summer experience, we will take students into the field and the lab to receive hands-on training in cutting-edge molecular biology techniques, including sample collection, nucleotide isolation and amplification, real-time DNA sequencing, and bioinformatics. Students will work closely with graduate student mentors in the Integrative Biology Department at UC Berkeley and get exposure to different research labs, natural history museums, and core facilities on campus.
We begin by proposing research questions and learning how to collect specimens in the field. After sample collection, students learn lab techniques required to isolate and prepare DNA from different kinds of specimens. Students then sequence this material using miniaturized DNA sequencers. Finally, the last half of the course is devoted to teaching students how to analyze and interpret their data including statistics, basic computer programming, and visualization. Throughout the course, lectures highlight current topics in field genomics and research including biodiversity, environmental change, phylogenetics, human health, and data science.
The overall goal is to provide participants with hands-on field and lab experience, teach them cutting-edge genomics research and analysis techniques, and expose them to the rich resources in and around the world-renowned UC Berkeley campus.
