IB132L Mammalian Physiology Laboratory

Tour Lab 9: Independent Investigation of Exercise Physiology

students on treadmills

You can choose one of the suggested topics or come up with your own. The groups pictured above examined the energetic cost of walking and running. To help you plan your investigation, this page shows some of the equipment provided in addition to what you used in previous labs.
This cycle ergometer allows you to measure the power output of your muscles in watts. You can vary the resistance (load on your muscles) and pedalling rate (velocity of shortening of your muscles). A metronome helps to keep a steady rhythm. cycle ergometer
You can simulate the physiological effects of diving by submerging your head in a tub of water. A mask and snorkel are provided. simulating a dive
A backswing or inversion table allows a relaxed subject to be tilted to a variety of positions. backswing
Bbbbrrrrrrrr!! If you're interested in effects of air temperature, you can spend some time in the 12 degree C walk-in coldroom near the lab or an even colder -5 degree C freezer. in the coldroom
