Lab 6: Pulmonary and Cardiovascular Measurements in Humans

Overview

One way to understand human physiology is to examine the physiological responses of a person to changes in physical activity. In this laboratory you will learn to monitor non-invasively several physiological parameters that you might expect to vary with the type or intensity of physical activity. These parameters describe circulation, lung function, oxygen consumption, and metabolism. As you collect baseline measurements on a volunteer subject from your group, consider how these parameters might change with various activities. For next week's lab exercise (Human Exercise Physiology), you will design an experiment using these techniques to investigate some aspect of human response to physical activity. The activity you choose can employ any of several types of exercise equipment we will demonstrate to you during this week's exercise. Before the end of this lab, you should discuss with your GSI a preliminary design for your experiment and start your proposal.
