Research Opportunities
Graduate students
While students under my supervision undertake research that is broadly paleobiological in nature, they are encouraged to develop their own research projects, and to take maximum advantage of formidable resources available in UCMP, Integrative Biology and on the Berkeley campus. I am willing to advise students in any research area that is interesting and close enough to my own areas of expertise for which I feel I (or the collective expertise of the student’s Ph.D. committee) can provide competent guidance.
Undergraduate students
Undergraduates are always welcome to apply for research positions to pursue their own research ideas, or contribute to the projects currently underway in the lab.
Research facilities
The University of California Museum of Paleontology has excellent facilities for paleontological and molecular research, including fossil preparation labs, DNA extraction and PCR labs. UCMP is also home to the largest university collection of fossils in the country, as well as sizable collections of Recent taxa. The catalogued portion of the collection include:
- Invertebrates: 15,000+ type specimens, 500,000 Recent mollusks.
- Vertebrates: 190,000+ specimen records from nearly 11,000 localities.
- Microfossils: ~ 2.2 million items (i.e., slides, processed material, and bulk samples).
- Plants: 33,400+ specimens of fossil plants, algae, and fungi.
