Question and Reply about Autecology Lecture:
A student wrote Prof. Power about a statement in the Autecology lecture.
The student's question:
In the autecology lecture webcast, you said that surface area to volume ratios increase with size, making homeostasis a little harder to accomplish and possibly restricting niches, but on the slide it says that these ratios decrease, making internal regulation easier. Is it just a typo on the
slide, or did I miss something?
Professor Power's response:
It was a speako on the audio if I said surface to volume ratio increases with size, in fact it decreases (making homeostasis easier to maintain). Work out a few examples with for example a cube. 1 x 1 x 1 inch vs 4 x 4 x 4 inch.....(S:V = 6 sq inches:1cu inch vs 96 sq inches: 64 cu inches), or analytically, we have 6(LxL)/(LxLxL) = 6/L, which decreases as L increases.
Midterm #2 Test Rooms:
Here are the test rooms for Midterm #2 held on Friday, November 6, 6-7 PM.
GSI Office Hours:
Here are the GSI office hours held in 2013 VLSB during fall semester.
Bioscience and Natural Resources Library Guide:
The staff of the Bioscience and Natural Resources Library have developed this Library Guide for you to refer to as you complete your library assignment. If you've forgotten how to format a citation, how to search in BIOSIS, or if you have any other questions about the assignment, this is a good place to start. You're also welcome to visit the reference desk in the Bioscience Library, 10-6 M-Th and 10-5 on Friday.
Lecture Schedule, Reading Assignments and Lecture Notes
Lecture begins on Wednesday, August 26 with Plant and Fungal Diversity (Dr. Thomas Carlson), followed by Ecology (Dr. Mary Power) and wraps up with Evolution (Dr. John Huelsenbeck). The lecture schedules for each section are available at these links or by clicking the corresponding pictures at the top of the page.
Lab Manual:
We no longer publish a lab manual that you are required to purchase. Rather, each lab exercise is available to download (in PDF format) from the Laboratory Schedule page.
About PDF files:
PDF (Portable Document Format) files are used extensively on this site and the internet in general, as they are (computer) platform independent (that is, the files can be exchanged between hardware running different operating systems, whether it is Windows, Mac OS, Linux). Software is readily available to open, view and print PDF files. Many computer systems come pre-installed with software that can do this. If your computer lacks software that can open PDF files, then download the free Adobe Reader program from this link (Adobe created the PDF file format). Be sure to select the correct platform and operating system for your computer.
Warning To Cheaters:
Here is a Warning to Cheaters, a letter that was written by a former Biology 1B student who was caught and disciplined. This student was obligated to share this letter with their peers in part to fulfill the requirement for readmittence.
Tips for Taking Multiple-Choice Exams:
Dr. John Latto, who has taught this course during previous summer sessions, has written a Guide for Taking Exams based on Multiple-Choice Questions which he has graciously allowed us to share with you.
