Rauri completed his studies in 2003 at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He then spent a year at the Field Museum in Chicago as a postdoctoral fellow before returning to South Africa to begin an faculty position at Stellenbosch University, in the heart of South Africa's wine country.
In October 2006 Rauri returned to the USA to take up the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology and Curator of Birds at the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, University of California at Berkeley.
