Analytical Capabilites

The Center for Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry maintains and operates two Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometers (IRMS) for the measurement of stable isotope ratios of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen in organic and inorganic samples.

Finnigan-MAT Delta Plus XL. Triple collector mass spectrometer for CO2 and N2 gasses, with additional wide dispersion collectors fod H/D analysis.

Peripherals:
  • CE Instruments 1500 Elemental Analyser:
Couples with a Finnigan MAT Continuous FLow Interface (ConFlo II), for on-line analysis of the isotope ratios of C and N of combustible organic materials in bulk samples.
  • PreCon:
An automated pre-GC concentration device for high presicion isotope analysis of atmospheric trace gases.
  • u>Gas Bench II:
A universal on-line interface which allows automated isotope ratio determination of small gas samples.
  • H/Device:
A system connected to the dual inlet system of the IRMS for water and volatile organic compounds.

PDZ Europa Scientific 20/20 Mass Spectrometer. A 120 degree triple collector mass spectro meter designed specifically for continuous flow analysis.

Peripherals:
  • ANCA - SL:
A solid-liquid elemental analyzer for on-line analysis of the isotope ratios of C and N of combustible organic materials in bulk samples.
  • ANCA - TG:
A pre-concentration system for the analysis of 13C, 15N and 18>O in atmospheric trace gases.
