Checking for prostate cancer:

PSA blood test

PSA (prostate specific antigen) – protein made only by the prostate, normally secretes small amount into bloodstream.

Enlarged prostate secretes increased levels

High levels of PSA could indicate prostatic problems:

Prostate cancer

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlargement) – restricts urethra

Prostatitis (infection of prostate) – mainly due to gonorrhea & trichomoniasis

Confirming a test result

Transrectal ultrasound

Biopsy-remove prostate tissue sample with needle

Prostate Cancer Treatment

Removal of prostate gland (radical prostatectomy)

May affect erectile or bladder control functions

Radiation

May affect erectile functions

Androgen-suppressing drugs
