Checking for prostate cancer: PSA blood test •PSA (prostate specific antigen) – protein made
only by the prostate, normally secretes small amount into bloodstream. •Enlarged prostate secretes increased levels •High levels of PSA could indicate prostatic problems: –Prostate
cancer –Benign prostatic hyperplasia
(enlargement) – restricts urethra –Prostatitis (infection of prostate) – mainly due to
gonorrhea & trichomoniasis Confirming a test result •Transrectal ultrasound •Biopsy-remove
prostate tissue sample with needle Prostate Cancer Treatment •Removal of
prostate gland (radical prostatectomy) –May affect erectile or
bladder control functions •Radiation –May affect erectile
functions •Androgen-suppressing
drugs •Wait-and-See approach |
