CPS Clicker Questions

How do I register my CPS clicker into the class?

**   Click here to register your clicker and/or to enroll in the class.

*If you are already using the clicker for another class, simply log in with your user name and password and click on the “enroll in a class” link and enter our class key:   I16813L942

*  If this is the first or only class you are using the clicker, select the “create your account” link in order to register your clicker.

You will need the class key: I16813L942 and your CPS clicker’s serial number located either on the sticker attached to the back of your clicker or located under the batteries beneath the bar code; your serial number will begin with “r”. You will also need a credit card to pay the $15 registration fee online. The $15 covers all classes that you will use the CPS clicker for this semester.

How do I find my clicker’s serial number?

Your CPS clicker’s serial number located either on the sticker attached to the back of your clicker or located under the batteries beneath the bar code; your serial number will begin with “r”. Click here for a demo of locating your serial number.

How do I use my clicker in class?

            4 Easy Steps:

1.      Turn on your clicker by pressing the power button at the bottom of your clicker; hold for about 2 seconds to turn on.

2.      Hit the “Join” button.

3.      Hit “11” on your key pad to indicate which channel we are using.

4.      Hit the “Send” button.

Now you are ready to participate in class. Click here for a demo of your clicker buttons.

How will you take attendance with the clickers?

At the beginning of class, I will put up a grid of all the students’ clicker numbers on the projector screen. When the grid is up, follow the 4 steps above to make sure your clicker is joined into the class, then press “1” and “send”. Your key pad number will light up blue when you are checked in.

How do I know what my “key pad number” is?

When you register your clicker to the class, you will receive an email confirming your registration status as well as provide you with your “Pad ID #”. Also, when you log on to your account at www.einstruction.com, it will also tell you which class you are registered into as well as the Pad ID # for that class. The Pad ID # is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis depending on when you registered your clicker.

Administrative Questions

Is your class offered in the fall?

    No, just spring semesters

How do I talk with you in person?

You can come to office hours which are immediately after each class. No appointment necessary, first come first served. If none of these times work for you, you can email me to make an appointment at ivychen@berkeley.edu

How do I select Pass/Not Pass as a grade option?

You can change it yourself on Telebears

What counts as “passing” in the Pass/Not Pass option?

At least 70% in the class grade.

Attendance

I missed class last week; can I get notes from you or the GSIs?

No, you need to get copies of notes from other people in the class.

Are your notes posted online somewhere?

No, come to class to take notes. In addition to the outline notes presented on Power Point, I say a lot more to clarify the points so you get a lot more out of lecture by being there and listening. Let’s face it – if you could download notes from class, you wouldn’t show up to class!

Books

Do you have the required reading on reserve at the library?

Yes, there are 4 copies of the Pinon textbook on 2 hour reserve at the Bio-Sci Library in VLSB. The class reader is NOT on reserve.

Why aren’t there any books on reserve at Moffitt library?

Moffitt will apparently only keep lower division undergrad books on reserve. I was rejected and was told to put all copies of the book at the Bio-Sci library.

I still have not gotten a class reader yet; where can I get one?

At Copy Edge located at 2121 University Ave (x Shattuck), Call 510-845-5702 to reserve a copy.

Do I have to purchase the Pinon text exclusively from the Cal bookstore?

Nope, you can get the text anywhere you can find it: Amazon.com, Ebay, etc. The Cal bookstore only has new copies of the text.

 Agree-Disagree Paper

How do I cite quotes from lectures?

Simply say in your sentence, "According to lecture....", put in your quote or paraphrase, then put the date of the lecture in parenthesis at the end of the sentence.

What should the heading of my paper include?

Very simple: your name, your SID #, IB 140, Spring 2006. No cover page necessary!

Sample:

 I Chen 123456789

 IB 140, Spring 2006

                                                         Title

Start your essay here - blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. ....................

Can my  Agree/Disagree paper be longer than 4 pages?

Yes, you can write slightly more than 4 pages, but if you have much more, you can probably make your thoughts more concise. You won't be penalized for exceeding the page number requirement, but try to keep to around 4.5-5 pages max.

Can I cite from readings that are assigned from future lectures in my papers?

Yes.

Can I use an outside source to cite for my papers other than the reader and the textbook?

I prefer that you use the resources assigned to the class, but if there's an especially good article, you may use it with permission from me (let me see it) and with a copy of the article attached to your paper when you turn it in.

Can I respond in the first person (using "I" or "me") in my Agree/Disagree paper?

Yes, because you will be incorporating your own personal experiences into the paper, it's much more natural to write using I or me.

How will I be graded on my Agree-Disagree paper?

Every paper will have a grade sheet attached to it. Below is a sample grade sheet with the criteria:

Exams

Will I need a scantron form or a blue book?

No, just bring a pencil & eraser. You will write directly on the exam.

What is the best strategy for studying for the exam?

Actually, coming to class regularly and taking good notes serve as the best strategy. In fact, I tell you actual test questions during lectures;  I often point out specific vocabulary terms or statistics that I want you guys to know.

How can I check my exam grades in the class?

They will be posted on this website under “Class Grades” listed in alphabetical order by student ID numbers.

How long after an exam will I be able to check my grade?

Hopefully in about a week after you take the test.

I’m an ESL student, can I bring a dictionary to the exams?

No, in many cases, the question is asking you to define a term that was presented in class so bringing a dictionary would give you the answer to the question and that would be cheating.

Does the final cover material from just the midterm #2 on or from the whole semester?

Just from MT #2, so it’s the last 1/3 of the course only.
