In this course, we will be examining
many aspects of sexuality that confront us in contemporary life (social and
cultural, biological [anatomy and physiology], and health related). We will explore sexuality through lectures,
discussions, readings, guest presentations, and videos. The goals of this course are for students to:
(1) gain a general knowledge of the significant issues presented in this class;
(2) be able to assimilate the information and be able to use it in everyday
life; and (3) be able to enrich their lives in terms of sexual expression,
maintaining good sexual health and forming productive and satisfying intimate
relationships.
Topics presented in the class
includes anatomy
and physiology of reproductive organs, endocrinology of the menstrual cycle;
puberty, psycho-physiology of copulation and orgasm; fertilization and
implantation; infertility and reproductive technologies; sexual dysfunction;
conception and contraception; pregnancy and abortion; birth and lactation; sexual
differentiation of brain and reproductive organs; sexually transmitted
infections.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Attendance
Students
must attend class regularly; attendance will affect your grade, especially if
you have a borderline grade. We will take roll. If you miss class, you are
responsible for getting your own notes; class notes will not be posted on the
web or emailed out from the instructor/GSIs.
Attendance
will be taken with the CPS remote control pad. For full details on how to
register the remote controls to yourself and to the
class, check under FAQs of the class website. Our class key code is I16813L942. In addition to attendance, we will use the remote controls to conduct
anonymous in-class surveys and answer sample exam questions. Put a name label
on your remote. Be sure to bring your remote control with you to every class.
Your
class grade will come from 6 different assignments:
(1) In-class Midterm Examination #1:
This exam will consist of
identifications, matching items, fill in the blank, short answers and short
essays. The questions will be drawn from lectures, readings, class discussions
and videos shown in class in the first 1/3 of the course. No make-up exams will be given. Exam grades
will be posted on class website under “grades” approximately a week
after you’ve taken the exam. Exams
can be viewed in discussion sections and will be collected after viewing.
(2) In-class Midterm Examination #2:
This exam will be the same
format as midterm #1. The questions will be drawn from lectures, readings,
class discussions and videos shown in class in the second 1/3 of the course. No make-up exams will be given. Exam grades
will be posted on class website under “grades” approximately a week
after you’ve taken the exam. Exams can be viewed in discussion sections
and will be collected after viewing.
(3) Agree / Disagree Analytical
Paper: Due
Choose only one of the three following
statements on which to base your paper:
1. Orgasm is a crucial element to every
sexual encounter.
2. If a couple is infertile,
they should just accept their fate rather than pursue extreme reproductive
technologies, which are both very costly and not easily
effective.
3. If I
were to be diagnosed with an incurable sexually transmitted infection, I would
make it a point to disclose that fact to a potential romantic partner early
(within the first 2-3 weeks) in the relationship.
Pick the statement that speaks
the strongest to you about your beliefs and values about sexuality and society.
Either agree or disagree with the statement, keeping in mind how this statement
relates to the ideas presented in class and/or general tone of this course.
Include at least 4 citations from lecture or reading that supports your
argument – no outside sources. Citations must include source (class
reader, Pinon textbook, or lectures) and page numbers
or date of lectures. Include in your
answer experiences from your own/friends’ relationships, opinions and
values.
Please save copies
of your papers. Your grades for these papers will be based on: (1) the accuracy
of facts you present; (2) how well you argue your position(s); (3) essay
structure [introduction (with strong thesis statement), body, and conclusion);(4) clarity and use of college level English; and (5)
promptness.
The
paper should be 4 full pages in length, double-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman
font, 1-1.25 inch margins all around. Write your last
name and SID# on every page as a header. Papers
will be accepted during class time only, and will be collected by discussion
sections at the beginning of class. No
papers will be accepted through email or in the IB dept office. For every class date that your paper is late,
you will lose a full letter grade.
You are
required to attend one assigned discussion section each week. Your GSI will
design, administer and grade quizzes pertaining to materials presented in
class. Your top 10 quiz scores will be counted towards your class grade.
(6)
In-Class Final Examination:
The final examination consists of identification, matching
items, fill in the blank, short answer and short
essays. Questions will be drawn from lectures, class discussions, readings, and
videos shown in class. The final exam is not comprehensive and covers
material presented from the last 1/3 of the course. No make-up exams will
be given. Exams grades will be posted on class website under
“grades” approximately a week after you’ve taken the exam.
