Lab Schedule Summer Session 2007

Dr. John Latto
is the instructor for the Summer Session of Biology 1B.

Office Hours: Mon.-Thurs. 1:30-2:30 PM in 2013 VLSB

Office hours are primarily for me to answer your questions. They are not private. Feel free to come and just listen to other students' questions. Questions about adding/dropping the class, missing an exam etc. should be taken to Mike Moser, the Academic Coordinator for Biology 1B. Questions about the lab section, missed lab work, etc. should be taken to your GSI.

E-mail: jlatto@berkeley.edu

I will answer questions by e-mail. Please make questions concise; more general information is probably best covered in office hours.

Lecture Outlines and Sample Midterm Questions:

Lecture outlines are available below in both PDF and MS Word formats. These are not comprehensive notes but are a framework to aid your own note taking. Sample questions (with annotated answers) will also be available on the website before each midterm.

Audio Files:

I will record all the lectures and make them available online as mp3 files. I hope these are useful if you miss a portion of a lecture or find your notes inadequate or misplaced. Since these are recorded directly from the microphone feed, the quality should be better than audience tapes, although you are welcome to record the lectures yourself if you wish. The files will be available below.

Bio1blog:

This year sees the continuation of the Bio1blog (yes, I know it should really be Bio1bblog). This will contain links to material that supplements the lectures, links to research mentioned in lecture and anything else that amuses me (and is relevant). This material is for your general education and will not be directly covered in exams: http://bio1blog.blogspot.com/.

Assigned Textbook Readings:

Textbook readings are given for nearly all the lectures. The material will reinforce and supplement the material presented in lecture. The reading can be done either before or after the lecture (depending on your individual learning style) but it is strongly recommended that you do it. In some cases the text will provide more information than the lecture. Read the next paragraph to find the answer to the most frequently asked question in this course.

Examinations:

The lecture material is assessed in the three midterm examinations indicated on the Syllabus. There will be 50 multiple-choice questions on each section. There is no cumulative final. All the material tested in the three midterm exams will have been covered in lecture. The vast majority of the material will also be covered in your textbook. Material in your textbook that is not covered in lecture will not be included on the midterm exams. Please read that last sentence again.

Responsibilities:

MineYours
To be prepared and to be on time for lecture. To make a commitment to spend the necessary time studying outside class.
To present material in a clear and interesting way and to emphasize the most important points. To seek help as soon as possible if you have problems, not at the last minute.
To design a fair examination and ensure any complaints or problems are dealt with promptly. To be fair to your fellow students. eg. turn off your cellphones, try to arrive on time etc.

How to do Well:

• Use all the resources available: lectures, with lecture notes provided and audio files to fill in gaps; textbook with accompanying CD and online material; discussion section; Biology 1B website, etc.

• Practice answering questions. Use the samples given, those from your textbook, on the CD and online. You can also use the websites of some other major Biology textbooks:

Life, The Science of Biology Purves et al.
Biology Raven et al.
Biological Science Freeman

• Attend and participate in discussion sections. Don't just listen, come prepared to take part.

• Come to office hours to clear up questions. Don't leave it to the day before the exams, office hours are quite busy on those days.
