Dr. Mary Power Biology 1B Fall 2008 Ecology Schedule

Dr. Mary Power
is the instructor for the Ecology section of Biology 1B during the Fall 2008 semester of Biology 1B.

Office Hours: 9-10 AM, Monday & Friday in 2013 VLSB.

E-mail: mepower@berkeley.edu

Message from Prof. Power:

During the Ecology section of this course, we will explore the heterogeneous, fluctuating environments of Earth, the ways in which plants and animals interact with these environments, and how effects of environments on organisms and organisms on environments are often mediated through webs of interactions that include competition, predation, parasitism, and mutualism. We will look at how the biosphere works as a "system" and how ecologists and other earth scientists are trying to forecast the environmental consequences of land use, climate change, population growth, and other important topics we hear about in the news every day.

** (Revised Oct. 30) Professor Power has posted a revised copy of the lecture she delivered Wed Oct. 29, as several students noted, there were slides that had been modified after the older version was posted last week. The new version includes a simple web diagram explaining the fox effect on vegetation in the Aleutian islands.

The Ecology review session on Monday, 2-4 pm, in 2050 VLSB will be podcast free of charge--many thanks for this to Richard Bloom, David Kapsiak, Airdri Stoddart, Tyler, and the other folks in our great Educational Technology Services!
