Guidelines for Inviting a Visiting Scholar or Student Researcher
Visiting Scholar and Visiting Student Researcher appointments are handled by Sean Swift.
The Visiting Scholar and Postdoc Affairs (VSPA) office reviews all visiting scholar and student researcher appointment requests. Invited applicants must satisfy the specifications for Visiting Scholar or Visiting Student Researcher according to VSPA policy. These appointments are neither compensated nor are they benefit eligible. The scholar is responsible for their own funding and to maintain health insurance if applicable (e.g. to satisfy J-1 requirements).
Information needed from the faculty host:
- Written request that includes the start and end dates of appointment;
- brief description of visitor’s research program and/or description of duties
- Sample request letters in Word format are available to download for Visiting Scholars and Visiting Student Researchers
Documentation needed from the visitor (these can be sent as attachments to sks@berkeley.edu)
- A completed VSPA application form in either Word format or PDF format. The visitor’s signature is not required on this form until arrival;
- A copy of the visitor’s current curriculum vitae;
- A brief description of funding for this visit (i.e. monthly rate and funding source).
Note:
- Visiting Scholar and Visiting Student Researcher appointments must be documented and approved by VSPA prior to the visitor’s arrival.
- The appointment request material should be provided to Sean at least two months prior to the proposed start date to allow ample time for approval. International visitors requiring visas SHOULD PLAN EARLY and contact Sean at least four months prior.
- These Visiting titles are subject to an annual $200 University Services fee.
