How to Hire an Undergraduate Student

Student hiring is handled by Lloyd Monroe.

We are able to hire registered UC undergraduate students through a streamlined recruitment/hiring process. (Students are also eligible for employment on this basis for one semester after graduation – for spring graduates this means the summer.)

  • Students are limited to a maximum of 20 hours per week during the semester (for all student jobs combined).
  • They can work 100% during the winter break and summer.
  • Students who work 50% of the working hours in a month (does not count holidays) will get holiday pay on a pro-rated bases (maximum of 8 hours for 100% work).

Students eligible to be hired through the Workstudy program will have half their salary covered by Workstudy funds (up to their maximum allocation). Those not eligible for the program can still be hired through the Student Placement Office.

Information needed to hire an undergraduate student:

  • Written or e-mail request from the PI.
  • Brief description of the duties
  • Minimum qualifications needed, including any specialized skills, etc.
  • Job title (if known); Lloyd can provide guidance and samples on titles and their corresponding pay rates.
  • Start and End dates
  • Percentage of time or number of hours
  • Supervisor
  • Fund Source
  • Only a Workstudy position, or also listed at Student Placement?

The position will be listed with the Workstudy and/or Student Placement Offices. If you have a student already available for the position, it still needs to be listed but will not be advertised. The PI should e-mail Lloyd with name of the person selected, and the student should contact Lloyd by phone (2-8475) to make an appointment to sign up.

He/she should bring to this appointment:

  • Passport or 2 other forms of ID (Other forms can be a drivers license, UCB student ID card, or California State ID. With any of these you will also need your Social Security Card or Birth Certificate.)
  • Visa and work authorization documents (for non-citizens)
  • Voided check (to set up direct deposit)
  • Social Security card/number
