How to Hire a Graduate Student Researcher (GSR)
GSR Appointments are handled by Lloyd Monroe.
GSR Salary Scale [PDF]
BEFORE a student can be signed on as a GSR, the following information is needed:
- Written or e-mail request from PI
- Fund source for payroll charges
- Start and end dates of appointment
- Salary rate (or step on GSR salary scale)
After PI has forwarded the above information, the student should contact Lloyd by phone (2-8475) to make an appointment. He/she should bring to this appointment:
- Passport or 2 other forms of ID (Other forms can be a drivers license, UCB student ID card, or California State ID. With any of these you will also need your Social Security Card or Birth Certificate.)
- Visa and work authorization documents (for non-citizens)
- Voided check (to set up direct deposit)
- Social Security card/number
Note:
- GSR must be formally appointed BEFORE they begin work.
- Grad students are limited to working a maxiumum of 50% time during the academic year. They can work up to 100% during summer and winter break.
- Students in good academic standing may request exceptions to the 50% limit (if total does not exceed 75%). These requests are made through our Graduate Student Affairs Officer (Mei Greibenow) to the Graduate Division.
- GSR appointments of 25% or more for an entire semester qualify for partial fee remission (Registration Fee, Educational Fee, Health Insurance); appointments at 45% or more for an entire semester receive a full fee remission (Fees covered in partial remission, plus Berkeley Campus Fee and Transit Fee). The cost of the fees are charged to the fund source paying the GSR salary.
- GSR appointments in IB are generally made at Step II for new GSRs and at Step III for those with several years of experience. However, PIs have the flexibility to set the pay rate at whatever point on the scale is appropriate for the student’s situation.
- GSRs need to document their effort by turning in monthly timesheets approved by their PI.
- For detailed explanations of this information or to discuss special situations, please consult with Lloyd Monroe.
