How do I contact an IB professor?
Please use our Faculty Directory for contact information. If a professor is unreachable by phone, please use their email address, or drop by their office to see if they have posted office hours. You can also send a letter, attention to the specific faculty member, to the departmental mailing address: UC Berkeley Department of Integrative Biology, 3060 Valley Life Sciences Building, Berkeley, California 94720-3140.
I’ve tried to contact a professor numerous times with no response; how do I get in touch?
Professors receive dozens of emails a day, in addition to their teaching and research responsibilities. They may not have time to respond to general inquiries, and emails may occasionally get lost in the shuffle. If you are having trouble getting in touch with a professor, you are welcome to try multiple methods of reaching them (phone, email, office hours, snail mail). Please keep in mind that the IB staff does not keep professors’ schedules and unfortunately, we do not have the resources to facilitate contact with the faculty.
If you are a journalist or a prospective PhD student, please keep reading the FAQ for more information on your particular question.
How do I find information on faculty research interests?
Please check our Faculty Research Interests page for a list of all Integrative Biology faculty members and their respective research interests. You may also want to visit professors’ individual lab websites (included with their profiles in the faculty directory) for more information. More information about some Faculty can be found in the Faculty Feature Interviews.
If you are a prospective PhD student, please visit Graduate Admissions also.
I need to talk to an expert about…
If you have a specific faculty member in mind, please contact him or her via email. You are also encouraged to explore information available through the Berkeley Natural History Museums, a consortium of research museums specializing in entomology, vertebrate zoology, anthropology, paleontology, and plant biology. Scanning the Faculty Research Interests (see above) may identify someone with expertise in the specific topic or organism for which you seek information.
I’m a journalist and I need help with my story.
UC Berkeley Media Relations has a comprehensive list of resources to help with your story. If you are interested in contacting an IB professor for an interview, please contact him or her directly with the Faculty Directory.

Undergraduate Questions
How do I contact IB Undergrad Advising?
IB Undergraduate Advising contact information and advising office hours.
How do I add/ drop a course?
Information on how to add or drop classes is available on the Undergraduate Advising page of the Berkeley L&S website. Before the add/drop deadline, you can add and drop courses on TeleBears. If the deadline has passed, you will have to fill out a petition for an exception to the regular deadlines in order to add or drop a class.
How do I get off the waitlist for a course?
In general, we would advise you to first wait through the first couple weeks of classes to see what happens, and try to have a backup plan in mind. If you would like to discuss your options, come by the IB Undergraduate Advising Office.
I have a question about course equivalency….
For California community colleges, please check assist.org. Other courses will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis; please see the advising office before taking the class if possible. If you are currently taking a course at another institution, make sure to keep the syllabus.
How do I get a course entry code for an IB-sponsored course?
Please contact an IB advisor or drop by the advising office for help.
How can I find a professor’s office hours?
Please call, email, or drop by the professor’s office to find out when his or her office hours are held. Most professors post their office hours on their office doors or on a corkboard nearby. See: Faculty Directory for particular professor.
How can I get credit for research?
Please familiarize yourself with the research information available and contact the advising office if you have any additional questions.
Commencement questions?
IB Commencement is held each Spring: visit the Integrative Biology Commencement page for more information. If your inquiry is about the “Commencement Convocation,” or any other department, please view the Berkeley main graduation page for more information.
