Summary of Computing Services (Within the Department and Beyond)

CalNet ID

Your CalNet ID is an online "identity" required for access to a number of UC Berkeley online services. With an activated CalNet ID you can apply online for a Socrates account (see below), download campus-licensed software, access electronic information systems, and more.

IB Procedure: After the hiring process is complete, see Rob Weinberg or Sean Swift for a 'token' to activate your Calnet ID online.

See the CalNet ID site for more information and instructions for online activation of your CalNet ID.

Email

All UC Berkeley students, faculty and staff are eligible for email accounts on CalMail, the campus email server. See the Berkeley Internet Link and CalMail sites for more information on obtaining a CalMail email account.

Graduate students and faculty are also eligible for an Academic Computing Research (ACR) fund account on the Socrates server for computational software, web publishing, file service and general UNIX computing. Mathematical and statistical software is also available for use. Apply online for a Socrates account using your activated CalNet ID.

IB Listserves
The department maintains an electronic mailing lists through which general announcements are made to the Department. You should subscribe to these lists once you have an email account.

Contact the following staff member to subscribe:

  • Graduate students: ibgradsao@berkeley.edu
  • Faculty: aloct@berkeley.edu
  • Postdocs: sks@berkeley.edu

Note: If you are already in the online IB directory, you have been automatically added to the corresponding listserve.

If you are associated with one of the museums or herbaria, check to see about subscribing to their lists as well.

Remote Access

SHIPS
If you are planning to work on a computer at home and would like to be able to access the internet, you may set up a Home-IP (HIP) account or a low-cost Subscription Home-IP Service (SHIPS) account. Information on these accounts is available at the Berkeley Internet Link site.

You may alternatively wish to sign up with one of the many available commercial internet service providers.

C@B
The Connecting@Berkeley (C@B) CD provides an easy way to configure your computer for internet access. It is available through The Scholar's Workstation (TSW) or the Student Computer Consulting Service.

Computer Facilities

Two microcomputer facilities are located inside the Biosciences Library, on the second floor of VLSB. One of these is a general use facility, available for drop-in use. The other can be reserved for use by particular classes during certain periods. Graduate Student Instructors should check with the librarian to reserve it for a section.

IB also has a computer lab for instructional use. Contact the IB Instructional Support unit for information or reservations.

Additional facilities are available in Dwinelle, Moffit Library and Wheeler Hall.

Museums and Herbaria have limited computing facilities available for students associated with them.
