Opportunites for Undergraduate Bioscience Majors for Research Experience in Laboratories in the S.F. Bay Area

There are numerous research facilities in the S.F. Bay Area that may provide undergraduates with work experience.   Some of these opportunities will have to be on a voluntary basis, but other facilities have paying positions in the form of internships or traineeships.   To obtain research experience at UC Berkeley, students should inquire of faculty members and research staff regarding possible openings.   Graduate students should also be asked about their needs for part-time help during the school year and full-time assistance during the summer.   To apply to other (non-UCB institutions, students should do the following:

Prepare a letter expressing your desire to do volunteer work, or to be considered for a summer internship (if available).   Include information on your background, courses taken (including grades earned), lab experience, etc.   Include a schedule of times when you will be available.   If you have an area of primary interest (e.g. G.I. functions, immunology, reproduction, etc.) indicate that in the letter.

Send several copies of your application to the people of the institutions listed below, and request that they be distributed ot appropriate members or faculty in the institution.   If you are called by a scientist for an interview, read some of her/his published papers so that you can discuss the researcher's work intelligently during the interview.

If you live outside the S.F. Bay Area you should check with local universities, hospitals and commercial or other research facilities for opportunities to do some voluntary research apprenticeships during the summer.   Some of these may have paying internships.   Also look in the newspapers to see what companies are hiring.   You may be able to intern while you are in school and then turn the position into a paying job after graduation.
